An Angel
On this past magical Christmas Eve, I awoke early and embarked on a 25-mile journey to my hometown beach, a place that holds a symphony of memories. Now residing in the warm embrace of South Florida, it has become my sanctuary, my "happy place" to frequent.
On my way back, a spontaneous visit to my cherished bakery unfolded, revealing an unexpected openness. With only a handful of souls inside, including the diligent workers, I ordered my comfort food, settled into a cozy spot, and patiently awaited my coffee.
And then, a breathtaking moment unfolded. A young man, seemingly weathered by life's storms, graced the bakery with his presence. With his pit bull by his side, he embodied an ethereal resemblance to the very image we often associate with Jesus Christ – in his late 20s, with cascading dirty blonde hair, eyes that shimmered with a vivid green, and a short beard. His homelessness didn't diminish the divine aura that surrounded him.
He took a seat across from me, and our eyes met in a silent understanding. Compelled by a surge of empathy, I rose and approached him, asking if I could offer him something. His response was a soft, "A Monster drink would be lovely." Sensing his unspoken hunger, I inquired about food, to which he responded with a grateful smile and a nod. He didn’t need anything else.
As I handed him his drink, our hands briefly connected, a tender exchange that spoke volumes. Even when I offered to get something for his loyal pit bull, he graciously declined. A bystander, an elderly man on the corner, acknowledged the moment, not for show, but with a heartfelt "great job" and gratitude.
Yet, this story isn't merely about the beauty of a random act of kindness; it's a testament to the profound events that unfolded on that sacred Christmas Eve. Earlier, during a soulful walk along the beach, I had whispered my prayers, pleading for a sign that angels surrounded me in the midst of my recent struggles. I asked for a sign, and oh, did I receive.
As the barista handed me my coffee, I paused and asked the young man his name. With a smile that penetrated to my core, he uttered, "Angel." In that vulnerable moment, tears held back by a trembling voice, I acknowledged, "Yes, you are. Thank you. You are undoubtedly an angel in my life today."
Curious, he reciprocated, "You are the angel, ma'am. What's your name?" Although he asked, it felt like he already knew.
With a heart full of emotions, I whispered, "Millie. I hope you have a beautiful day. Thank you."
His smile lingered as I walked out, tears streaming down my face. Upon reaching my car, I hesitated, started the engine, then turned it off. Fueled by a profound connection, I rushed back inside, only to find that he had vanished, leaving behind the memory of a fleeting encounter.
God works in mysterious ways, sending his angels in various forms. Some even bear the name they embody. This experience is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the reassurance that, when we earnestly seek, we shall find. Hold onto your faith, dear ones, for angels walk among us.
I love you.
